Blogger’s New Content Policy – Towards Orwell’s Ministry of Truth?

Starting December 16, 2026, Google will introduce changes to Blogger’s content policy. Officially, the aim is to protect users from misinformation, harassment, and harmful content. But the real question is: who gets to decide what is true and what is false?

Google proclaims its commitment to freedom of expression while reserving the right to judge the accuracy of published information, remove posts, shut down blogs, and restrict access to accounts.

This is where the Orwellian contradiction lies: in the name of protecting free speech, a mechanism is established that can be used to restrict it.

The most effective form of control is not even censorship itself, but self-censorship. Writers begin to weigh what they are allowed to say and what might be wiser left unsaid.

Will stricter censorship begin on December 16? The available information does not establish that. What is clear, however, is that Google retains broad powers to determine what content is acceptable on its platform.

Orwell’s Ministry of Truth was a state institution. Today, a private corporation can exercise a similar power to decide what constitutes truth.

Freedom of speech remains. Its boundaries are determined by the platform owner.
